Benefits You can increase your security and your peace of mind by installing anti-virus software and registering your computer with the University. Keeping a remote copy of your system’s logs on a central, secure log server can help you recover more quickly from a system crash or analyze a security incident. Security software can alert you if your system has been compromised.  And you can be assured of a safe and secure connection to the University’s campus network if you use a VPN client.
Key Features
  • Anti-virus software – download and use McAfee VirusScan for Windows and Mac.
  • File integrity monitoring – lets you know when files change on your UNIX or Linux system.
  • Time synchronization with Network Time Protocol (NTP) – synchronizes your computer with the University’s standard time clock.
  • Central log repository (remote logging) – logs your system event information to a remote server to help you recover more quickly from a system crash or help you analyze a security incident.
  • Network Registration (NetReg) – get a University-assigned IP address by registering your computer with the University.
  • Virtual Private Network (VPN) client – creates a secure tunnel between your computer and the campus network.
Requirements
  • BUVS only runs on Windows.
  • File Integrity Monitoring only applies to Linux or UNIX servers on the BU campus network.
  • Remote logging requires a system located on the BU campus network with a local logging facility that can write to a remote syslog server.
