Prior to coming to BU in 2012, Emi Yamanaka taught Japanese at Harvard University for 12 years. Her research interests include pedagogy, interlanguage pragmatics, and second language acquisition. She has also developed technology-based language learning resources, including publicly-funded projects. She is the author of a few book chapters in the fields, including Pragmatic Notice through Web-based Collaborative Learning (in Japanese) (in Dai-ni Gengo Shutoku Kenkyu no Shin-tenkai, Tokyo: Kuroshio Publisher), Online Collaboration for Pragmatic Development (in Pragmatics: From Research to Practice, TESOL), Structure of Japanese Noun Modification and L2 Learners (in Japanese) (in Nihongo Kyoiku no Kosanten de, Tokyo: Keisuisha).
