Pipier Smith-Mumford

Field Director, Senior Lecturer

Dr. Pipier Smith-Mumford is the field director for the EdD program and a senior lecturer in the Educational Leadership & Policy Studies department at Boston University Wheelock College of Education & Human Development. She has been a forerunner in efforts within the “schoolhouse” to influence education policy and reform. During her 19-year tenure as principal in Brookline, Mass., she facilitated progressive, collaborative education strategies, inclusive of the diverse voices of all who work with children and young people. This included, among several topics, leading staff development in issues of racial equity and the opportunity gap.

In addition to her work at BU Wheelock, Smith-Mumford consults with local school administrators and faculties on issues of equity, diversity and inclusion, in addition to coaching and mentoring newly appointed school administrators through Massachusetts School Administrators Association.

The current climate in PK-12 education is a direct result of the national racial awakening and the worldwide pandemic of COVID-19. My research interests lie in examining how school administrators address the challenges they face. One area of focus is to understand whether coaching and mentoring by facilitators of color helps to move the needle in the quest for equity in schools while also providing support to principals and other building leaders. How does whole-school professional development that focuses on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) impact student achievement?
