Andrew Johnson is a postdoctoral associate in the Educational Leadership & Policy Studies department at Boston University’s Wheelock College of Education & Human Development. Working in collaboration with Dr. Jerry Whitmore, Dr. Johnson conducts research on higher education financial aid and student loan forgiveness policies. Andrew also serves as an affiliate researcher with the Wheelock Educational Policy Center.

Dr. Johnson’s scholarship centers on the economics of education, educational investment decisions, and student outcomes. Andrew employs critical quantitative and mixed methods approaches to analyze PK–16 education policies, including school choice initiatives and factors that influence college persistence. This work draws from economics, sociology, and psychology to examine how students and families navigate educational opportunities. With expertise in causal analysis, experimental design, and policy implementation, Dr. Johnson investigates how structural and contextual conditions shape educational decision-making. A commitment to social justice informs this research, emphasizing diversity, equity, and inclusion across educational systems, processes, and outcomes.

Dr. Johnson earned a PhD in Education Policy from Michigan State University. Prior to pursuing doctoral study, Andrew taught middle school mathematics.
