In Memoriam: Carol Reed Findell

Dr. Carol Reed Findell, professor emerita of mathematics education, passed away on October 25, 2025.

Carol Reed Findell

A pioneer in mathematics education, Dr. Findell began her career as a high school teacher and later served as an adjunct professor at UNH. In 1988, she earned a PhD from Boston University, where she taught mathematics education for more than two decades.

Dr. Findell co-authored numerous mathematics resources and worked with teachers nationwide, earning two Balomenos awards and induction into the Massachusetts Mathematics Educators Hall of Fame. She served as editor of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) publication Student Math Notes and on the editorial board of the New England Mathematics Journal. She was a member and chairman of the Question Writing Team for the Mathcounts Competition and was head of the writing team for the Figure This! National campaign to promote mathematics education reform.

She is survived by her five children, their spouses, 15 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and her siblings.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 15, at 5 pm, at the First Church of Belmont, 404 Concord Ave., Belmont. Condolences and memories may be shared online at swdfuneralhome.com
