Celebrating Staff Excellence and Impact at BU Wheelock
BU Wheelock recognized three staff members with annual awards honoring excellence in service, leadership, and impact. The awards highlight staff contributions to operations, student support, and community engagement throughout the college.
Nate Canty received the Boyd E. Dewey Award for Excellence, while two new honors were introduced this year: Reggie Jean received the Diversity and Belonging Champion Award, and Lauren Somers received the Outstanding Start Award.
Boyd E. Dewey Award for Excellence
Nate Canty
Named after Dean Boyd E. Dewey, a long-time BU staff member of over 40 years, this award recognizes members of the BU Wheelock staff who exemplify dedication and service to the Wheelock community and embodies the values of excellence, good citizenship, and cooperation.
As director of the Data and Enrollment Management Office, Nate Canty supports departments across the college with diligence, thoughtfulness, and precision. His work ensures that key systems and processes run smoothly, strengthening support for students, faculty, and staff across the College.
Diversity and Belonging Champion Award
Reggie Jean
This award recognizes a staff member who actively advances the institutional values of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, with a particular focus on fostering an inclusive environment among staff and across the broader community.
As director of the Boston University Upward Bound program, Reggie Jean’s work not only empowers students to succeed academically but also strengthens connections among staff and across the wider institutional community. Through his leadership, he has helped cultivate a culture of access, encouragement, and belonging that extends beyond the program itself, reinforcing a shared commitment to educational equity and community engagement throughout BU Wheelock.
Outstanding Start Award
Lauren Somers
This award recognizes a staff member who has been at BU Wheelock for fewer than three years and has already made a significant impact.
As human resources administrator, Lauren Somers has helped improve HR operations at BU Wheelock by supporting clearer processes, stronger coordination, and more efficient workflows across the team. Her work has contributed to driven meaningful change and reflects a strong dedication to excellence and collaboration.
