How did you get involved in research?

I got involved in research by emailing multiple professors whose research interests were similar to mine.

How did you meet your mentor?

I interviewed with the research coordinator of my mentor’s lab and was accepted. I then met with my mentor following and began discussing my research interests and basic projects I could start on to help me gain experience.

What has your UROP experience taught you?

My UROP experience has taught me how to be a leader in a group environment, but also emphasized the importance of remaining collaborative. I have learned to analyze data critically, ask questions that have societal impact, and always pay attention to detail.

How has this experience helped you with non-research related things at BU?

This experience has helped me with non-research related things at BU as I think more critically about small details and am also able to see the bigger picture. I have found these skills applicable in all my classes and even at my job as a Student Admissions Representative for BU Admissions.

What does a day in your research life look like?

Most days when working on my research project I come into the lab and work on whatever data analysis or project write ups I have. Additionally, I collaborate with my grad student mentor frequently to keep moving the project forwards.

What advice would you give to someone interested in UROP?

I would encourage people interested in UROP to reach out to lots of labs who share research interests with them and don’t be afraid to email any lab PI. I was able to present my research at the International Society of Developmental Psychobiology in Fall 2022 and won Best Undergraduate Poster! My UROP experience has allowed me to explore the research world with confidence and narrow in on my specific research interests. I have felt supported by my PI and grad student mentors to stretch my abilities and learn by doing.
