Disaster: A large scale interruption of normal operations where returning to normal operations is not straightforward or rapid. For instance, if the location from which operations are normally conducted is no longer usable.

Disaster Recovery (DR): Returning to an operational state following a disaster using alternative locations and/or methods. Frequently this will not be a full normal operational state, but rather a limited operational state intended to support only the most vital activities.

Continuity of Operations Planning (COOP): What does your school or department need to continue to do in the face of a disaster? How will you do those things? For more information see the Emergency Management COOP website.

Enterprise Risk Management (ERM): A plan-based strategy that aims to identify, assess and prepare for potential disaster situations that may interfere with the university’s operations and objectives.

Emergency Response Planning: BU’s Emergency Management department is responsible for planning how the university as a whole will respond both generally and to specific types of events. For more information see the Emergency Management website and in particular the Emergency Response Plan.
