Dr. Zikopoulos is the Chair of Sargent College’s Health Sciences department, and an Associate Professor and Program Director for the PhD Program in Human Physiology. He is also the Director of the Human Systems Neuroscience Laboratory (http://sites.bu.edu/brainlab/).
His research involves the study of the structural organization, molecular features, and connections of brain circuits in humans or animal models and their disruption in disease. He uses cutting-edge, high-resolution experimental histopathology, microscopy, and imaging approaches, complemented by advanced computational modeling and machine learning to understand complex relationships between brain structure and function, with the aim to identify biomarkers and fundamental mechanisms underlying the development of neuropathology in attention, mood, and anxiety disorders, including autism, depression, and schizophrenia.
This experimental and theoretical framework helps Dr. Zikopoulos’ team derive principles from complex data on brain connections and their interactions and provides a solid foundation to integrate bench and clinical research across neuroscience disciplines to train the next generation of systems neuroscientists.
