Tutorial: Pitching to Find a CEO for Your Startup

You’ve got a great idea that you want to commercialize by launching a startup. Congratulations! But you don’t want to be CEO, either because you want to stay at BU or you prefer to focus on the technology rather than running the company.

The main success factor for startups is a team that executes well. Finding the right CEO to spin your startup out of BU is your essential first step in launching a successful team. The right CEO for your startup will share your vision for the future of the company, but only if they perceive that you have not only a great idea, but a great value proposition.

This tutorial will guide you through the process of “packaging” your idea in preparation for meeting candidate CEOs. It is your responsibility to make the story about your innovation as compelling to a businessperson as possible, so that they will want invest their time, energy and reputation into building a great company. Your “pitch” to the candidate needs to be clear, concise, and compelling.

Pitch coach Linda Plano, PhD, has adapted her original 10 Questions (that every pitch should answer) to help you craft the story in a presentation that will engage candidate CEOs to understand both the business and science of your idea. The goal is to stimulate discussions between you so that you can be confident that you can develop a productive and rewarding partnership.
