Tanner Hammond (Ph.D., Boston University) works on issues at the intersection of three primary areas: (i) ethics and social philosophy; (ii) philosophy of mind and emotion; and (iii) post-Kantian European philosophy, with special attention to early phenomenological and existential thought.
Tanner’s recent publications focus on the role of emotional experience in moral cognition and moral agency, including issues of self-awareness, evaluative intentionality, person-level motivation, and interpersonal attitudes. Tanner’s historical interests center on bringing the neglected but influential work of phenomenologist Max Scheler to bear on issues in contemporary debate. Tanner also has clinical training in psychotherapy, and has research projects on theoretical and ethical issues in contemporary psychotherapeutic modalities.
