Title: “Let Us Speak the Truth”: On Schopenhauer’s Ethical Ideal
Abstract: Schopenhauer’s ethics is often interpreted as advancing two distinct, normative ideals: when confronted with a world that is neither rational, merciful, nor just, the devoted ethical agent will either respond through resignation or compassion. In this paper, I offer a third alternative and argue that this alternative is what Schopenhauer’s great pupil, Friedrich Nietzsche, has in view when conceiving “the philosophy of the future.”
