Alumnus Sheldon Krimsky (’70), Scholar and Friend of BU CPHS, is Remembered

The Department is sad to share that Sheldon Krimsky (’70), the Lenore Stern Professor of Humanities and Social Sciences at Tufts University, an alumnus of the BU Philosophy doctoral program, and a long-time friend of the BU Center for Philosophy & History of Science, passed in late April 2022.

Professor Krimsky taught at Tufts for a little under half a century in the fields of science, technology, ethics, and public policy. His devoted work and activism in these fields no doubt was nurtured while studying at BU for his doctorate and working with Dr. Robert Cohen, a co-founder of the BU Center for Philosophy & History of Science.

You can read more about Professor Kremsky’s life, work, and incredibly powerful impact on Tufts and the field of philosophy here, in a beautiful obituary published by Tufts.
In lieu of flowers, Krimsky’s family asks for donations to be made to the Sheldon Krimsky Fund for Environmental Ethics and Values, which has been established at Tufts to promote environmental ethics. Donations can also be mailed to Tufts University, P.O. Box 3306, Boston, MA 02241-3306. Tufts University plans to also hold a service in celebration of Professor Krimsky’s life sometime in Fall 2022.
As his colleague and director of the BUCPHS, Professor Alisa Bokulich, wrote, “may his life and work continue to inspire.”
