The Philosophy Department Goes “Green”

At the urging of the Department Chair, the philosophy department is making every effort to save energy, conserve resources, and minimize waste.  Professor Griswold has asked that all departmental computers, monitors, and printers be shut off at night; that the ‘last one out’ turn off the lights; that incandescent lights be replaced with low energy use fluorescent lights; and that faculty use the internet to disseminate class materials.  Paper recycling baskets have been placed in all offices, and a reminder sent out concerning plastic and glass recycling bins in the basement of the building.  He is also in discussion with university officials about installing timers on all lights and storm windows, as well as about affordable recycled paper for the photocopier.  The Department’s efforts go hand in hand with a renewed emphasis on teaching courses on environmental philosophy and ethics, as well as the annual Karbank symposium in environmental philosophy.
