Course Materials (Reserves): on-site and online

Scores, spoken word and music recordings, books, articles, and personal copies may be placed on closed or open reserve, and we can assist with integration of digitized or linked content within your class site, via the library catalog, or both. Learn more about placing items on reserve.

Class Instruction and Collections

We work with BU’s BlackBoard and MyMedia sites. We create class research guides by request, can prepare or assist with screencasts, and are interested in proposed courses, leveraging our hidden holdings, enhancing access. We offer classes several in-library orientation and hands-on workshop venues, or we can travel to your meeting place. Support is ongoing for thesis writers and student researchers. Please also see our Collection Development Statement.

Mugar Classrooms 203 and 205

These must be booked through your school’s scheduling coordinator (Library staff cannot assign these). The rooms seat 25 and 42 respectively, and include wireless signal, upright piano, chalkboard, overhead computer projector, DVD, VHS, audio CD, and turntable.  Control panel cables are provided only for PCs.

Streaming/Digitization/Photocopy/Scanning

The libraries offer several online subscriptions to a/v databases. If you are interested in creating a class listening list within the Naxos Music Library, please obtain your password and step-by-step guide from us. We also offer custom audio and visual work from our physical holdings at shared workstations for format transfer and digitization. The Krasker film and video collection offers additional consultation and services. A variety of scanners and photocopy machines are located on the 1st floor of Mugar, and microform reader-scanners are available in the Mugar’s upper basement. While scanner output may be emailed in small amounts, we recommend use of a flash drive as backup.

Loans, Carrels, and Consortia

Your loan period for books and scores is 52 weeks; recordings leave the library for periods as long as needed. Sign in to BU Libraries search to view your account and to make renewals.  To authorize your teaching assistants to borrow on your behalf, contact Mugar Library Circulation mugcirc@bu.edu and attach a letter of authorization and copy of your ID; your assistant will, in person, also present their current BU ID. Faculty carrels are located on floors 4, 5 and 6 of Mugar; for an assignment, contact Tim Riordin, Stacks/Study Carrel Coordinator. The University Libraries offer robust Interlibrary Borrowing options for request and delivery, and participation in the Boston Library Consortium and OCLC Reciprocal Faculty programs.
