The Boston University Music Library is a full service internal branch of Mugar Memorial Library offering an in-depth collection of traditional and digital content as well as online course content building and support.
Books, scores, current periodicals and open reserves are readily accessible in open stacks during the Mugar building hours.
Recordings, reference help, restricted class reserves in physical format, named collections (for instance, Voisin, Fiedler, La Forge, McGrew) as well as items designated music storage or ‘inquire at music library,’ are only available during staff and listening room hours.
Area Boston University alumni are encouraged to keep their library card current, and we invite our Distance Education affiliates to check Music DE advisories.
Visitors are welcome to use the collections on-site. Boston Library Consortium members and OCLC Reciprocal Faculty Program members should confer with staff at their home institutions in advance of their visits in order to secure borrowing authorization.
Our music library graduate student staff, undergraduate student staff and permanent staff will gladly cover additional logistics and essentials in orientations lasting about twenty minutes. The head librarian and assistant head librarian also welcome the opportunity to collaborate on more extended work with classes as well.
Note: Music Curriculum Library
There are two distinct music libraries on the BU campus, the Music Library located on the 2nd floor of the Mugar Memorial Library and the Music Curriculum Library located on the 2nd floor of the College of Fine Arts building at 855 Commonwealth Ave. The Music Curriculum Library houses the performing collection of the BU School of Music ensembles along with a selection of solo and small ensemble music and piano/vocal opera scores. The two libraries do not have a linked catalog, so the Music Library encourages patrons to reach out to the Music Curriculum Library directly with questions involving their materials and policies using the link below.
