Leo J. Cushing Recognized as an Outstanding Scholar-Mentor

Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education Inc. honored Cushing at the annual New England Estate Planning (and More) Conference.

Leo CushingLeo J. Cushing (LLM in Taxation’85), founding partner of Cushing & Dolan PC, and lecturer in the Boston University School of Law Graduate Tax Program, was recognized recently with a Scholar-Mentor Award from Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education Inc. (MCLE).

Presented at the 19th Annual New England Estate Planning (and More) Conference, the award celebrates “outstanding individuals who have ‘raised the bar’ through their career-long contributions to the continuing legal education of the bar and their exceptional service to the legal profession by volunteering their time and expertise to MCLE programs and publications,” according to the MCLE announcement.

Cushing was recognized for the many MCLE programs he has taught in the areas of taxation and estate tax and over the past 25 years. In addition, he has advanced two of the organization’s practice guides, as co-editor of Preparing Fiduciary Income, Gift, and Estate Tax Returns and contributing author of Real Estate Title Practice in Massachusetts.

A noted expert in taxation and estate tax, Cushing’s practice includes all aspects of sophisticated estate planning techniques, asset protection, trust planning, charitable giving, and resolution of tax controversies. As a lecturer in BU Law’s Graduate Tax Program, he has written and lectured extensively on all aspects of taxation and estate planning and teaches the Taxation of Trusts and Fiduciaries in the spring and will be teaching Partnership Taxation in the fall.

Cushing is a former director of the Boston Estate Planning Council and a current member of the Massachusetts Bar Association, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, American Association of Attorneys and CPAs, the Boston Estate Tax Council, Boston Bar Association, and the National Association of Elder Law Attorneys. He is a co-chair of the Estate Planning, Trusts & Estate Administration Committee for the Real Estate Bar Association for Massachusetts and is also on the board of directors.

Prior to establishing Cushing & Dolan PC, Cushing earned his certified public accountant designation while working as a tax professional for the international accounting firm of Ernst & Young. Prior to Ernst & Young, he served as an assistant attorney general for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts where he prosecuted criminal tax cases and defended the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in various civil claims against state agencies. More importantly, his firm has hired numerous BU and BU Law graduates. Two of his former students will join Cushing and Dolan this spring.
