Maureen Leo

Maureen Tracy Leo

Director, International Graduate Programs

Biography

Maureen Tracy Leo brings a rich background in international legal education and teaching. Before attending law school, she gained diverse experiences, from interning at the White House to working at a homeless shelter for women and children through the Jesuit Volunteer Corps. After graduating from law school, Maureen clerked for Judge William M. Nickerson of the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, later moving to Boston to work at a large corporate law firm.

Driven by a desire to return to public service, Maureen became Assistant Regional Counsel at the Department of Children and Families, where she litigated child abuse and neglect cases. She also served as a court investigator for the juvenile court for over a decade.

Following the birth of her eldest child, Maureen transitioned to academia, teaching Legal Research and Writing. In addition to teaching, she worked as an Attorney Advisor in the Office of Professional Development at the Office of Graduate and International Programs, served as a public interest/pro bono career advisor in the Career Development Office, and later became the Associate Director for the American Law Program.

Maureen currently serves as a lecturer of law and the Director of International Graduate Programs, overseeing both the American Law and Intellectual Property LLM Programs. With nearly two decades of teaching experience, she also leads the LLM Legal Research and Writing Program and teaches a section of the course. Her work is dedicated to providing students with an exceptional experience both inside and outside the classroom, from pre-arrival advising and orientation through to registration, events, and commencement. In 2022, she received the recipient of the Cohen Award, the highest honor given to a staff member at the law school in recognition of exceptional service and impact on the institution.

Maureen recently earned a Master’s in Education, with a focus on Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from Boston University’s Wheelock College. She graduated summa cum laude from American University’s Washington College of Law and holds a Bachelor of Arts from Loyola University Maryland. She also spent her junior year studying political science at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium.

A mother of four, Maureen enjoys exploring the mountains of New England with her family, whether skiing or hiking. She has traveled extensively with her husband and children and can name the cheapest place to order an ice cream in most of the world’s capitals. Maureen considers herself blessed each day to be able to work with the best students on earth from her office in Boston.

LAW AM 704

Research and Writing Seminar (LLM)

2 credits

This two-credit Legal Research and Writing seminar is required for LL.M. students in the American Law program and optional for students in the LL.M. programs in Banking and Financial Law and Taxation. It is specifically designed to introduce foreign lawyers to the basic principles of American legal writing. In small class settings and individual conferences, students receive guidance on drafting and editing memoranda and agreements. Their work is critiqued and rewritten. The research component of the seminar trains students to locate cases, statutes and secondary material through indexing systems and the latest computer technology. Research assignments are integrated into writing assignments -- exposing students to the methods of US legal analyses -- so that by the end of the term, students obtain the skills needed to write memoranda appropriate for submission to US law firms.
