Apprenticeship and Fellowship Programs
Hire a BU Law graduate for a one year position through our unique and cost-effective apprenticeship and fellowship programs. After reviewing your hiring criteria, we will match exceptional students for your consideration. You select the candidate best suited to your needs and practice.
BU Law’s unique In-House Counsel Fellowship Program matches top organizations with BU Law talent who are focused on pursuing in-house careers, for a one year position. BU Law will identify candidates that match an employer’s specific hiring criteria; the hiring decision is then made solely by the hiring organization. The Fellow and organization both commit to a one-year duration at a cost-effective, reasonable salary, plus benefits. You’ll find BU Law graduates are exceptionally well-prepared to contribute from the day they join your organization. Our students learn practical, hands-on skills that complement core legal theory. For example, our in-depth Transactional Law Program trains students to draft, structure, and negotiate agreements. Our extensive externships and semester-in-practice programs provide on-the-job experience in companies, government agencies, courts, and nonprofit organizations. If you’re interested in exploring our In-House Counsel Fellowship Program, please contact Meagan McKinstry, the Assistant Director for In-House, Corporate Counsel, Compliance, and the Private Sector.

Many BU Law students want to practice in small and mid-size firms, and these firms want to attract high-caliber talent but recruit talent outside the traditional law firm recruiting model. SMAP was created to place recent BU Law graduates with small to mid-size law firms for a one year apprenticeship, giving graduates an opportunity to add value to the firm, and utilize the skills developed at BU Law, to meet the firm’s immediate needs, in the context of a defined commitment on both sides. BU prepares students for small and mid-size practice through a practical skills-focused curriculum, including the Transactional Law Program, advanced writing courses, clinics and externships, and numerous extracurricular skills development opportunities such as journals and moot courts. To explore SMAP, please contact Jessica Leveroni, the Director for Private Sector Careers.

Launched in 2010, BU Law’s Public Service Fellowships continue BU Law’s long tradition of supporting our students’ pursuit of careers in public service. BU Law awards exceptional graduating third year students one year full-time Public Service Fellowships to enable them to launch their public service careers by working at non-profit organizations and government agencies providing legal assistance to underserved populations, where these organizations would not otherwise be able to employ a new attorney. The generous support of alumni and friends, who in 2015 exceeded a match challenge from the University, enhanced these opportunities by creating several named fellowships. BU Law Public Service Fellows have worked at organizations across the United States and abroad, including: If you are interested in potentially serving as a placement organization for a BU Law Public Service Fellow, please contact Eron Hackshaw, the Director for Public Service and Pro Bono.
