AI Fundamentals
LAWJD604
AI Fundamentals is an asynchronous online elective course that introduces first-year JD students to the foundational knowledge, professional responsibilities, and practical considerations governing the use of artificial intelligence in legal practice and that will give students experience using AI in a legal context. Students will complete a series of modules, delivered through Blackboard, at their own pace.
This class will be offered in the spring semester only for 1Ls. This course is required for students who will pursue the Certificate in Artificial Intelligence for Practicing Lawyers. To ensure that students acquire foundational AI competency as early as possible in their legal education, 1L students seeking the Certificate in Artificial Intelligence for Practicing Lawyers must complete AI Fundamentals by the end of their spring semester.
While this course is a spring course, the modules will be released to students at least one week before the start of spring term classes (during intersession), and potentially earlier so that students will have an opportunity to start them before the semester begins.
Students must take an in-person assessment. They will have two opportunities during the semester to take that assessment, depending on when they complete the modules. One assessment will be offered early in the semester, and one will be closer to the end of the semester. Dates and further details will be shared in late fall.
GRADING NOTICE: This course awards no credits and is graded P/F.
