Emergency School Closing Policy
As we respond to winter storms, please be aware of the University’s Emergency Closing policy and procedures:
In the event that weather or other emergency conditions warrant an all-day closing or delayed opening of the University, the following radio and television stations will make periodic announcements between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. on:
- WBUR 90.9 FM
- WBZ 1030 AM
- WBZ-TV Channel 4
- WCVB-TV Channel 5
- WHDH-TV Channel 7
- WFXT-TV Channel 25
Please do NOT call the University Police, radio, or television stations to verify a University closing. You may call 617-353-SNOW (617-353-7669) to hear a recorded message regarding the closing or delayed opening of Boston University. You also may call the University switchboard (617-353-2000).
Closing information will also be provided using the BU Alert email notification system and will be posted on the BU home page at www.bu.edu. WBUR will post notices on their site at www.wbur.org.
During the day, the decision to shorten the work/class schedule due to adverse weather conditions will normally be made by 3 p.m. On such occasions, Faculty, Staff and Students will be notified by the BU Alert email notification system. In addition, this information will be posted on the BU home page and on the home page of BU Today.
If there is a delayed opening, only classes scheduled to begin after the delayed opening will be held. For example, if BU announces a delayed opening of 11am, then classes that start at 10:40am or 10:45am, will not be held that day. Faculty will determine the time for the sessions to be rescheduled.
If there is an early closing, all classes will stop at the time of the early closing. For example, if BU announces a 5pm closing, all 4:20pm courses will stop at 5pm, and all courses scheduled to start at or after 5pm will not be held. Faculty will determine the time for the sessions to be rescheduled.
In addition to monitoring the BU SNOW line, we encourage you to review your local city ordinances regarding emergency procedures that can affect parking rules, and monitor travel sites, such as mbta.com for changes in public transportation.
Please follow all weather alerts. Your safety is our paramount concern. For additional information on Winter Storm Preparedness, visit the Red Cross.
