DOS Reduces Eligibility for Appointment Waivers for Visa Renewals
The US Department of State has narrowed eligibility for a waiver of the visa interview requirement. A recent DOS announcement reinstates the statutory 12-month post-expiration period for visa renewal applicants. This means that students and scholars travelling to renew their nonimmigrant visa will be required to schedule and attend an in-person interview at the consular post to renew their visas in the same category if their previous visa expired more 12 months before the renewal application which could delay visa renewal processing. All students and scholars are encouraged to confer with their ISSO advisor with questions about travel and visa renewal.
