A Talk by Mary Roberts, April 29th.

Microsoft Word - mary roberts flyer.docxWe are delighted to announce that Mary Roberts (John Schaeffer Associate Professor of British Art, University of Sydney, and currently a CASVA Senior Fellow) will present a talk on Wednesday, April 29, at 5:30 PM in Room 303A. The lecture, titled “Ottoman cultural patrimony in the Era of the Amateurs: Transcultural exchanges of Islamic art in the nineteenth century”, will focus on the status of Islamic art collecting in the second half of the nineteenth century. Her presentation will especially focus on Stanislaw Chlebowski, a Polish painter that played an integral role in the artist-dealer networks that dominated the art exchanges between Istanbul, Poland, and France. Following his trajectory reveals the ways in which modernity was expressed in Islamic art in both the East and West during this exciting period in history.

This is event is free and open to the public and cosponsored by Boston University’s Institute for the Study of Muslim Societies & Civilizations, the Department of History of Art & Architecture, and Boston University Center for the Humanities. There will be  a short reception after the talk.
