Commuting
MBTA
The MBTA student pass is a good option if you will be riding the T or bus to BU on a regular basis. Apply through the MyBU Student Portal. If you ever miss a deadline for the student pass, you can always purchase a monthly pass through the MBTA directly.
Biking
Bluebikes are a good option if you want to bike, but do not own a bike or did not choose to bring yours to the city. Free helmets are available for students at several locations around BU. More information on the Bike Safety Resources page.
Parking
Parking passes are available for students at several lots around the University. This is not recommended.
Zipcar
Zipcar is a great option if you want to get out of the city for day or need to run errands. Discounts for BU students.

BU Study Group
A group of scientists, students, and researchers who focus on skill sharing, co-working, and community building.
Graduate Student Slack team
A slack team for the Department was created by PhD students. Slack is a searchable group chat platform for quick and easy communication and file sharing among many people. Join the BU E&E Slack to organize events, ask questions, and share papers with your fellow students. Join the community (bu-earth.slack.com).
Business cards
Students can purchase business cards at a reduced rate through the Artcraft Company.
GSO
The Graduate Student Organization is a group of graduate student representatives from each department in GRS. We hold monthly meetings to allocate funds, plan events, and discuss issues related to the welfare of graduate students at Boston University. The GSO is completely student run, so nothing gets done without students like you.
GWISE
Graduate Women in Science & Engineering (GWISE) at Boston University strives to create a community to support and promote women in science, technology, engineering, and math fields. Through professional development seminars and workshops, social events, mentoring, and outreach, GWISE fosters interaction across disciplines at Boston University and connects graduate students to postdocs, faculty, and broader networks in Boston and beyond. GWISE is open to all who support our cause. As leaders of the community, GWISE works to advance university policies and programs that promote equality and foster diversity and excellence. Health & Wellness
Fitness Center
FitRec, BU’s fitness center, at 915 Commonwealth Avenue, is free to all full-time graduate students. The center has a pool, a climbing wall, basketball courts, cardio equipment and weights.
Student Health Services
Student Health Services is available to all current graduate students. They have a variety of services, most notably Primary Care, Behavioral Medicine, and the Sexual Assault Awareness & Prevention Center.
Life outside BU
It is healthy to have a life outside of BU and the Department. The following are just a few suggestions to explore in your free time.

- Research Computing Services (RCS) provides specialized hardware, software, training, and consulting for all areas of computational research at Boston University.

- The main computational resource provided by RCS is a large Linux cluster, the Shared Computing Cluster (SCC). This cluster is available to all University faculty, their students, and their collaborators for research and for educational use in courses related to computation.

- Research Computing staff are available to assist researchers in numerous areas. These include basic use of the system, accounts and allocations, optimizing CPU and/or I/O performance, programming in a variety of languages, statistics programming and applications, code porting, code parallelization, performance measurement, and numerical methods.
