Shamrock and Roll

The following message was sent to all students on Friday, March 14, 2025.

On St. Paddy’s, the city’s a blast,
But don’t let your night end too fast.
Watch out for the street,
Keep both shoes on your feet,
And get home with yourself intact!

Dear Students,

Our city breaks its long winter hibernation this weekend and turns green for St. Patrick’s Day. If you haven’t experienced some of the many community events that celebrate Irish heritage (including the Southie parade, live music, and unique culinary options) it’s the perfect opportunity to take part in a longstanding tradition.

Of course, enjoying this holiday safely takes more than pure luck – it requires smart choices, looking out for friends, and planning ahead. Pace yourself, stay aware of your surroundings, and make decisions you’ll be proud of the next day. Here are a few ways you can care for yourself and others this weekend:

  • The annual St. Patrick’s Day parade in Southie is a community staple. Remember that this celebration is for families and visitors in our great city, too. Conduct yourself in a manner that allows everyone to enjoy the event. The city is taking extra precautions this year to ensure this remains a family-friendly gathering.
  • Do not trade your safety for a moment of fun. Unless you are a shingle, stay off rooftops. Don’t overcrowd on decks and keep limbs inside of windows.
  • Be considerate of your neighbors. Many people call this city home, and they deserve to exist without disruption.
  • It’s important to know your limits. If you plan to imbibe, do so responsibly.
  • Take care of one another. Travel in groups and always know where your close friends are. Remember, BU has a Good Samaritan policy so you can seek assistance without worrying about sanctions.
  • Turn over your Terrier Card for important phone numbers should you need to call for help.

Please celebrate safely and make BU proud.

Take care,

Jason Campbell-Foster, Ed.D.
