Election Day: November 8th

Are you one of us? Who is we? Who are we, really?

Time to continue the debate, argument, discussion, analysis, deconstruction, and signifyin’ on these questions — and more — come this Tuesday (November 8). Questions so nice they deserve a good gathering.

  1. This has been a very difficult week for so many of us. It seems the election has emboldened the vitriol of many. I’ve seen atrocious behavior that I hadn’t seen since moving out of the Midwest. A few days ago, I reported to Dean Lynne Allen of the CFA that on Friday, I was waiting for the BU bus outside the CFA and dictating on my phone, when a homeless person (who was clearly mentally troubled and likely under the influence of illicit substances) came up to me proceeded to verbally assault me for four minutes. He called me a “f*ggot” and several other things I won’t repeat in public, but what was most unfortunate is that there were 5 or 6 CFA students around with their safety pins on whom I was trying to engage in a conversation to distract myself from the person and ignore him, and they simply stared at their phones and avoided eye contact.
Dean Allen responded with compassion, but with the unsettling information that I was one of a number of CFA students who had reported being harassed in the past week. Apparently she said that three CFA students this week alone have reported being verbally assaulted by other Boston University affiliates on the basis of their ethnicities. I know that she is working hard with other administration to figure out how to best address this issue in our community, but I know I speak for a number of people when I say that many of us are scared and feel less safe as a result of the hostility we see in the media and rising around us. I wish I would’ve had the courage to say this at one of the open meetings, but I hope that posting here for the world to see will encourage other BU students and faculty to take a stand against hate speech – and let the perpetrators know that hate has no place at our school! Keep up the good work. All the best, CG
