Results of autopsy show Chris Gedney had Stage 2 CTE
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — 15 months after former Syracuse University football star Chris Gedney took his own life, his widow, Seely Gedney, is sharing her husband’s autopsy results with NewsChannel 9’s Sports Director Steve Infanti.
The autopsy, performed by Dr. Ann McKee, a neuropathologist in neuro-degenerative disease at Boston University, shows the 47-year-old had Stage 2 Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease, likely caused by repeated head traumas.
There are four stages of the disease. At Stage 2, individuals suffer from depression, mood swings and short-term memory loss, among other things, as was well as suicidal thoughts.
Gedney, who played at Liverpool High School, before becoming an All-American tight end at Syracuse University played seven seasons in the NFL, for the Chicago Bears and Arizona Cardinals, before retiring in 2000.
