CDS DS 574 - Algorithmic Mechanism Design

Kira Goldner, Shibulal Family Career Development Assistant Professor of Computing & Data Sciences

About the course: Algorithms are used throughout our lives for resource allocation: assigning Uber drivers to riders, doctors to hospitals, ads to search terms, and so much more. But not all algorithms are created equal. When the algorithm is gameable, users might take actions to better their outcome, like an Uber driver driving off in the wrong direction. This class studies the math behind the design and analysis of "incentive-compatible" mechanisms, algorithms that are not gameable, so that they truly provide the guarantees we think they do in the face of strategic users.

In Fall 25, this course satisfies:

  • BS in DS Methodology Track for Advanced Data Science Methods
  • M1 and M5 competency cores and S1 and S5 subject cores for the PhD in Data Science
