What is your favorite Biology or BMB course?
CAS BI203 with Dr.Hartmann: The course covers so many important pathways and processes relevant to our daily functioning while also teaching you how to dissect and analyze research papers and prepare group presentations: you gain so many valuable skills which will help you in future courses in just a semester’s time.
What kind of research have you done?
For biochemistry, my research focuses on techniques such as X-ray crystallography and bioinformatics to study the mechanisms, structure and function of enzyme catalysis and biosynthetic pathways, specifically for PSKSDH2. The psychology research I help with mostly entails assisting with various aspects of research, including, but not limited to data entry, administering protocols, and conducting phone evaluations on a study focusing on a sexual intervention for transgender women.
How did you get your research position?
I began working as an Undergraduate research assistant at the Allen Lab in the Spring semester of my freshman year, which was preceded by a Fall semester during which I sent out several cold emails to various professors at BU. Luckily Dr.Allen was quick to respond to my email after receiving my reference from a senior who was graduating at the time and I got the position shortly after my interview!
With regards to the Sexual Reproductive & Mental Health Disparities Program, I was scoping out psychology labs at CARD (a great resource for anyone who’d like to be involved with clinical psychology research) and filled out the written application after which I received an invitation to interview.
