Joe Larkin

I aspire to do anything within my power to undermine the racist culture of academia and science. This was my major reason for being part of the BAC. As part of the committee I hope to learn from students, staff, and other committee members how I can leverage my position of power within BU and our society to build a more equitable community. I have a particular interest in fighting against the apolitical and meritocratic view that the academic and scientific world has of itself. It is a view that perpetuates society’s injustices and allows science to be leveraged for racist and imperial causes. In addition to fighting for students and other faculty, I also will try to assert the interests of non-academic staff, who are a cornerstone of the community here, often do the hardest and riskiest jobs, and are often left out of discussions like the ones that drive committees like ours.
