Current Research:

In periods of high stress, some bacteria undergo a process called sporulation, where they go into a dormant state to be able to withstand extreme conditions such as dessication, heat, antibiotics, and more. When they sense that environmental conditions have improved, spores exit dormancy in a process called germination. I study the relationship between sporulation and germination, particularly within the context of biofilms.
