Major/Specialization

General Biology

Where are you from?

Holly Springs, Mississippi

What is your favorite Biology or BMB course?

It’s very basic, but I actually had such a fun time in BI107! My professor was awesome and the material was naturally interesting.

What kind of research have you done?

Fortunately, I have the privilege of working in the Liu Lab. The lab mostly focuses on proteins and enzymes, and their application in a pharmaceutical context. However, my work in the lab mostly pertains to C. elegans, commonly known as roundworms. Recently, I have been learning how to maintain, freeze, and synchronize different colonies.

How did you get your research position?

Cold, cold, super cold emailing! I made a list of potential labs going through the faculty lists, before emailing each of them. If the professor didn’t reply, I would follow up with them after a few weeks. If they still don’t reply, don’t take it personally!! Someone will eventually get back to you.

What extracurricular activities are you involved in?

I am the president of Kasual Kicks, a soccer club on campus (feel free to reach out if you’re interested!!!). Other than that, I also play a range of other sports like tennis and basketball. I am also a member of the wonderful and extremely helpful BU Pre-dental Society.

What is your favorite dining spot on or around campus?

Ohh, this is a good question! I have a couple of answers.

The best dining hall is undoubtedly Fenway dining hall; anyone who tells you otherwise either hasn’t been or is lying. The only downside is that it’s located in BU’s Fenway campus, which is pretty out of the way, but it’s definitely worth the trip for a dinner date with a group of friends!

The best dining hall on the main campus is between Warren and Marciano’s, imo. I lean towards Marci’s just a little bit, but I am also biased since that’s where I usually eat (funny, I’m typing this at Marci’s right now). However, Warren just got renovated, and it looks super modern and nice, so they definitely win in the aesthetics department.

My favorite place to eat in all of Boston (if you count Cambridge to be Boston) is Izakaya Ittoku. It is an awesome place to eat with friends or to take your s/o. Every time one of my friends visits from out of town, I always take them here as a treat.

What is your favorite BU memory?

but my favorite memory was pulling an all-nighter with my CGS capstone group. There’s just something so strangely intimate and sweet about a group of college kids all struggling, yet still working on the same project. As we watched the sun rise over the famous CITGO sign from the top of Hojo, it really all felt worth it.

What’s one BU tip you wish you knew sooner?

It is very daunting to attend a new school, especially one as big as BU, and even more so if you’re coming here without anybody you know. You may find it hard to make new friends or really find a group of people that you click with. I had an issue with worrying about how others perceived me. Forget that– my advice: be authentic to yourself and be yourself. You have the opportunity to be whoever you want; no one can tell you otherwise or has the right to judge you. Be someone you would want to be friends with.

What are your post-graduation plans?

Hopefully dental school!
