What I Wish I Knew about Campus Healthcare as a First-Year
Three key tips for navigating campus healthcare and making the most of available resources.
As the Class of 2028 and the rest of BU settle into the heart of the second semester, I want to highlight the vital physical and mental health services available through Student Health Services (SHS). As a Student Health Ambassador and a senior in Sargent, take it from me—don’t wait until your fourth year to take advantage of SHS. Speaking from experience, I often invalidated how I was feeling, thinking my health was never “bad enough” to justify reaching out.
1. Don’t hesitate to visit SHS—even if you don’t have SHIP (Student Health Insurance Plan).
During my first year, I had no idea that appointments at SHS were free, aside from the costs of lab work, medications, and other treatments. I wish I had known this sooner, as it would have given me a space to talk to a healthcare provider about how I was feeling.
FYI: If you have questions about SHIP or health insurance, contact on-campus insurance resources. Insurance can be complicated—don’t be afraid to ask for help!
2. SHS can be your first stop for physical and mental health needs.
Even if SHS doesn’t provide a specific service, they can refer you to healthcare teams beyond BU. That said, let’s dive into what types of care you can get at SHS.
- Primary Care: Whether you have a cold, an injury, or need a vaccine, SHS can confidentially address your concerns.
- Sexual Health Services: SHS offers STI testing, emergency contraception, and gender-affirming healthcare.
- Behavioral Medicine: SHS provides short-term therapy sessions, psychiatry appointments, support groups, and connections to additional on- and off-campus support. If you need help, they offer a 24/7 emergency line and fast, confidential care. The average wait time for a first appointment is just three days—compared to external mental health services, where wait times can range from 14 to 65+ days.
FYI: SHS is a confidential service with staff who genuinely want to hear your concerns and support you. Reaching out will not have any negative consequences.
3. Explore additional resources BU offers for your well-being!
BU provides many resources to support students’ health and wellness. Here are a few of my favorites:
- Student Wellbeing: A hub of resources, including a free Headspace meditation account for BU students.
- Agganis Arena Sensory Room: A dedicated space to decompress if you’re feeling overwhelmed.
- Free Sleep Kits: Available through Health Promotion & Prevention.
This is just the beginning. I encourage everyone to explore these resources and maximize what BU offers. Remember, you should never hesitate to seek the support you deserve—BU provides a wealth of services designed to help you thrive.
