There are 3 comments on 50 Years After Jaws’ Release, an Alum’s Exclusive Photos Capture the Stars on Set

  1. The young man who went swimming with the first victim in the first scene was a BU student and was essentially the very first character in the film. He came down to Martha’s Vineyard from Boston completely unannounced and talked the casting director into giving him the part — Two scenes, a fair amount of dialogue. His story is detailed in the very first book that came out in the wake of Jaws’ success, “The Making of Jaws,” a very entertaining read about the extreme difficulty of the shoot. I had just graduated from BU myself at the time, a film major. I remember one of my professors showing us “Duel” and saying to keep an eye on this young director Spielberg. He was going to be major. This would have been around ’73 before Jaws was even filming. In ’74, no one at BU was talking about Spielberg filming on Martha’s Vineyard that spring. I wasn’t aware of it until the film’s release just months after I graduated.
