A BU Superfan
Alumni have attended thousands of BU events in the last several years. One alum tops them all.
Over the course of the Campaign for Boston University, more than 63,000 alumni attended over 8,400 events—from Alumni Weekend to Beanpot watch parties, networking events to Global Days of Service projects. More than 10,000 attended 10 or more events, and 127 went to 50 or more.
Ed Boesel is in a league of his own. He is the top alumni registrant for BU events: he attended 227 lectures, theater performances, networking events, and more during the campaign, and 47 between 2017 and 2018.
“Boston University is a very exciting place,” says Boesel (ENG’70). “It’s doing a lot of great stuff in many venues, and I find it absolutely fascinating to be part of it.”
A member of the crew team while at BU, he endowed the Edward Boesel Rowing Scholarship, given to a team member who is an engineering student.
He remembers his first College of Fine Arts production: Bluebeard’s Castle, during the 2011–2012 season. “It was far and away the spookiest, scariest, most exciting production of Bluebeard’s Castle I had ever witnessed,” he says. Since then, he’s supported CFA and Boston University Tanglewood Institute scholarships and programming.
In 2015, Boesel was inducted into the William Fairfield Warren Society. Named for BU’s first president, the society honors those who have made gifts to Boston University totaling $1 million or more.
A retired vice president of development and engineering at Fidelity Investments, he spends much of his free time at BU events. He has season tickets to BU hockey and basketball games; he attends other games and events when he has open days. “I’m often scheduled for 20 evenings in a month,” he says. “I think if I keep going really fast I won’t get older.”
