  1. Last May, at the Class of 2012 Senior Breakfast, University President Robert A. Brown offered this unsettling poem in closing:

Every morning in Africa a gazelle wakes up.
It knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will
    will be killed.

Every morning in Africa a lion wakes up.
It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle
    or it will starve.

    It doesn’t matter whether you’re a lion or a
gazelle, when the sun comes up, you’d
    better be running.

On Sunday, Brown’s final words at the BU Class of 2016 Matriculation ceremony are far more encouraging and wise:

“develop the ability to imagine, take the time to dream, and pursue your loftiest aspirations, so that your education is all that it ought to be.”
