BA in Archaeology 2022

Areas of Interest
My main interest in Archaeology is Cultural Resource Management (CRM). Since my ideal career goal would be to work for UNESCO, I paired by Archaeology degree with International Relations in order to get a holistic education that would prepare me for my goals. While I did not focus on a specific region of study I am mainly interested in Classical and Mesoamerican archaeology.
Excavation and Fieldwork
I excavated in the Aegean in the Summer of 2021. The site I worked on, located on the island of Despotiko, as a cistern from the Archaic period. I also interned at the conservation lab of the National Museum of Anthropology and History in Mexico City in the Summer of 2019.
How did your experience in the program shape your professional and personal life?
I’ve known since I was in middle school that I wanted to dedicate my life to protecting archaeological sites and cultural heritage. It wasn’t until I came to BU, however, that I was able to put a name on that profession: Cultural Resource Management or Heritage Management. Through BU I was able to expand my knowledge on the subject and figure out how to achieve my goals. I was also lucky enough to meet other incredible archaeology students that pushed me to be better and will be life-long friends and esteemed colleagues in our shared-field.
What interactions with members of the Archaeology faculty did you value most during your time in the program?
I was lucky enough to have had classes with most of the Archaeology professors, and if not, interact with them by working in the office or participating in program events. While I loved each course I had with them, Professor Elia is one of the professors I value the most. In my 4 years at BU, he became a mentor since he specializes in Heritage Management, my field of interest. I have learned so much from him and have benefited from his guidance. I will owe much of my future career in the field to his mentorship. I have also been grateful to interact the most with Bob Murowchick, David Carballo, and Maria Sousa. Whether through class, or outside events, these faculty members have been very supportive of my endeavors at BU.
If you could give a piece of advice to your past self, what would it be?
If I could give a piece of advice to my past self it would be to worry less about planning out every single step of my life in the coming years. When I was applying to college 5 years ago, I was sure that I would be attending the University of Texas at Austin. However, after receiving their rejection, BU became a once in a lifetime opportunity. Although at the time I felt out of control for my five-year plan being ruined, I am now incredibly grateful that I attended BU instead. So, I would tell my past self to not focus on planning out the future, and instead be open to change.
Anything else you’d like us to post or know.
I was so lucky to attend the Archaeology Program at BU. Whatever I accomplish in the future, I know it will all be due to this incredible program filled with supportive faculty and amazing people.
What are you currently doing?
I’m enrolled in the MA program in Cultural Heritage Studies at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London. This program covers practical and theoretical approaches to the key issues and working practices in the field of cultural heritage. Students benefit from the Institute of Archaeology’s emphasis on the role of heritage in today’s society, from the art and archaeology collections of UCL, and from the unrivaled resources of London’s museums.
