H.T. Than (ENG’85, LAW’93)

Mr. Than is an attorney practicing intellectual property (IP) laws in suburban Maryland, outside of Washington DC. He specializes in procuring utility and design patent protection for his clients in the US and worldwide. He also provides freedom-to-operate opinions for his clients’ products and litigates various IP matters and appeals in US federal courts, as well as in patent tribunals in Europe. He also negotiates and drafts IP licenses, joint development agreements and other IP contracts. He advises researchers during the development of new products and inventions. He also manages large patent portfolios for multinational corporate clients.

Mr. Than’s IP practice is in the fields of polymer science, architectural coatings, color theories employing human psychophysical reactions, fuel cells, hydrogen generation and storage, medical technologies, smart medical devices, pathogen detection, micro-fluidics, optical sensors for oil and gas applications, photonics, textiles, office stationaries, golf balls and clubs, and consumer products, etc.

Mr. Than submitted an amicus curiae brief to the US Supreme Court in Meso Scale Diagnostics, LLC et al. v. Roche Diagnostics GmbH et al. on the issue of federal preemption in patent licensing.

He worked as a senior project engineer for Exxon USA in New Orleans, LA, operating oil and gas fields in the Southeastern United States before attending law school.

Mr. Than received his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Boston University in 1985, a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Rice University in 1987 and law degree from Boston University School of Law in 1993.
