Your giving changes lives

When you support scholarships at Boston University, you make a real impact. Here are just a few of the grateful students you’ve helped.

You launch careers

“When I was 16, my mom and I immigrated from Jamaica to the United States, seeking new opportunities. I knew I wanted to pursue scientific research in college, so BU quickly became my top choice. Then I looked at everything going on here. My heart was set on BU, but I knew my family couldn’t afford it. My scholarship was life-changing. I just graduated with a BA in biochemistry and am getting my feet wet in the research industry by working in a lab for a few years, after which I will enroll in a PhD program. So much opened up to me at BU. The scholarship greatly reduced my family’s financial burdens.”

You open doors

“As a member of the BU Running Club, I get a double benefit: we don’t have a coach—we coach ourselves, so it’s a nice way to build commitment to each other and to yourself. Through the BU Student Food Rescue, I collect and deliver food to food banks in the Greater Boston area. Just seeing the smiles on the faces of the recipients is a reward in itself. My scholarship has given me all of these opportunities: to study film and TV, help the community thrive, and meet wonderful friends. Without scholarships, a lot of people wouldn’t be able to follow their dreams and pursue their passions. I feel so fortunate.”
Richard Boylan (COM’20)

You build community

“I’m a first-generation American, born in Pennsylvania. My parents are Turkish, so when I started middle school, we settled in Istanbul. But I knew it wasn’t where I wanted to stay. The transition from Istanbul to Boston was kind of unreal. BU is a very international community and so was very welcoming. But I also thought about what parts of my heritage I wanted to emphasize and put forward. So I joined the Turkish Students Association freshman year. We mentor each other and share experiences and advice. Scholarships make all of this possible; they are literally the only reason that I am able to be here. Being at BU changes the whole course of your life.”
