I am an incoming first-year or transfer student, who’s my academic advisor?

You will be assigned an academic advisor in the Engineering Undergraduate Programs Office during summer 2025. You can expect to receive an email in mid-to-late May with guidance and information about when and how to register for fall 2025 classes. Registration for fall 2025 classes will open for transfer students on Tues. June 17, 2025 and will open for first-years on Tues. June 24, 2025. Please follow the link to learn more about the ENG Undergraduate Programs Office.

I am currently enrolled in classes at BU, who’s my academic advisor?

Your academic advisor’s name is available on the MyBU Student Portal in the “Advisors” section of your main Dashboard. Depending on your circumstances, you may have more than one advisor.

Who advises on degree and major requirements?

The academic advisor plays a central role in guiding the student’s academic program, assisting in course selection and providing guidance and counseling on all academic matters.  Students are required to meet regularly with their academic advisors to ensure timely progress toward degree completion. You can reach your academic advisor in the Undergraduate Programs Office by scheduling an appointment with an advisor via Handshake, emailing engineer@bu.edu, or calling 617-353-6447.

Who advises on Hub requirements?

A student’s Academic advisor also advises students on meeting Hub requirements. You can schedule an appointment with your advisor via Handshake, by emailing engineer@bu.edu, or by calling 617-353-6447.

How do I make an appointment with my advisor?

You can make an advising appointment via Handshake; advisors will be available both in-person or remotely via Zoom. For quick questions, email your advisor directly or email the Undergraduate Programs Office at engineer@bu.edu. You can also reach the office by phone, Monday to Friday from 9 to 5, at 617-353-6447.

Faculty mentors

In addition to a professional Academic advisor, each student will also be assigned a faculty mentor. Faculty mentors are available to help discuss career goals, research opportunities, post-undergraduate opportunities, and the content of specific Engineering courses.

How do I change majors within ENG?

A student interested in changing majors within ENG should meet with their academic advisor to discuss the best steps to take in this process. The change of major form can be found on the ENG forms page.

How do I apply for an Intra-University Transfer (IUT) into ENG?

For policies regarding IUT, please consult the Boston University Bulletin. Students interested in transferring into ENG should also read through the information posted on the Engineering website, then contact the College of Engineering Undergraduate Programs Office by calling 617-353-6447, emailing engineer@bu.edu, or scheduling an appointment with an advisor via Handshake.

Who supports first-year students?

In addition to all of the faculty, advisors in the schools and colleges, residence life staff, and other students services staff across campus, BU has a team of Assistant Directors of First-Year Student Success (AD) whose sole purpose is to support first-year students as they transition to college. Each first-year student has an assigned AD – you can find their name on your MyBU Student Portal in the “Advisors” section of your main Dashboard. ADs provide guidance on a broad range of topics and help first-year students connect with the BU community – you should feel free to reach out to them with any and all questions!

If I have a question about a specific topic, where do I go?

Often you will have more than one possible source of information about a specific topic. And sometimes, if the topic is complex, you will be encouraged to consult with multiple people. The chart below gives you a starting place for common advising topics.

Additional Academic Opportunities

BU offers many different academic opportunities, including dual degree, double majors, minors, and honors options.
