The Graduate Certificate in Actuarial Foundations at Boston University’s Metropolitan College (MET) cultivates your ability to “think like an actuary” and helps develop actuarial problem-solving skills through exposure to topics that are crucial to the growing field of actuarial work, including interest theory and probability.

The Actuarial Foundations graduate certificate cultivates your ability to work with simple actuarial models in insurance companies, consulting firms, and related industries, while introducing concepts that are further built upon in the Graduate Certificate in Actuarial Science.

Coursework in BU MET’s Graduate Certificate in Actuarial Foundations is designed to help you build an understanding of the subject matter while providing sufficient preparation for the Society of Actuaries (SoA) and Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) actuarial exams: P and FM. Passing these exams, and the units you will receive for successfully passing Financial Concepts (MET AD 632) and Economics and Management Decisions (MET AT 511), or an equivalent MET course approved by your advisor, will put you in a good position to receive a “Pre-Actuarial Foundations” micro-credential from the SoA. Studies recently undertaken by the SoA indicate that this knowledge and these skills are in high demand within insurance and related fields.

Students who complete the Actuarial Foundations graduate certificate will be able to demonstrate:

  • An understanding of the basic “building blocks” of actuarial work: probability and the time value of money.
  • The ability to apply elements from a variety of mathematical, accounting, and economic concepts to real-world issues.
  • The skills to synthesize knowledge from certificate topics to understand and solve complex actuarial and non-actuarial problems.
  • The expertise to pass actuarial exams on the topics of probability and financial mathematics, and the background to achieve the VEE credentials in economics and accounting and finance.
