Trump Tariffs to Present Supply Chain Challenges

President-elect Donald Trump has made promises to impose raised tariffs on all imports, to widespread confusion and alarm. To help make sense of this pending change in US trade policy, Metropolitan College Associate Professor Canan Gunes Corlu, who coordinates MET’s Supply Chain Management programs, spoke with Manufacturing Dive.

One means by which manufacturers might seek to mitigate the raised costs associated with tariffs is to increase their imports of commodities and components, Professor Gunes Corlu said.

Still, she explained, there is no one-size-fits-all solution to the policy change.

“When it comes to tariffs, there is no best option you can take. It does really depend on your supply chain and your dependence on foreign countries,” Corlu said. “It is hard to say a best strategy across the board. I think the key is to map out the supply chain and try to understand your dependency.”
