WED DE 500: Introduction to the Deaf-World
Designed to provide a general introduction to the lives, history, and culture of American Deaf people who use American Sign Language (ASL) as their vernacular language. The role of schools in the formation of the community and maintenance of ASL will be examined. 4 cr. -
WED DE 501: Professional Seminar in Deaf Education
The professional seminar serves as an orientation to Bilingual Deaf Education, and surveys current trends in the field as well as cutting edge scholarship. During the seminar, students will have an opportunity to learn from leaders in research, advocacy, curriculum development, Deaf literature and more. Students will also select a specialization during this course. -

WED DE 531: Language Acquisition in Deaf Children
This course introduces students to the role of social interaction in early language learning among deaf children through flexible and individualized approaches to education. Students will learn about milestones in American Sign Language acquisition, and how to design early childhood classroom environments to support early learning. -

WED DE 534: Sign Language Structure
Covers the structure of sign languages, with a primary focus on American Sign Language. Topics include phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicology, language variation, psycholinguistics, and language emergence. Effective Spring 2021, this course fulfills a single unit in each of the following BU Hub areas: Scientific Inquiry 1, Research and Information Literacy. -
WED DE 535: Teaching ASL as a First Language
This methods course prepares students to design programming and teach ASL as a first language. Topics include vocabulary development, composition, comprehension, grammar, and understanding the foundations of literacy. -
WED DE 550: History and Culture of the Deaf
Analysis and discussion of the historical and cultural aspects of the Deaf; the influence of geographic, cultural, educational, and economic forces on Deaf people; and the patterns of social change during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Introduces students to specific cultural and historical experiences and acquaints them with literature in the field. 4 cr. -
WED DE 552: Seminar: Selected Topics in Deaf Studies
Topics pertinent to current cultural and educational issues concerning Deaf adults and children. Children's literature, development of services for and by the Deaf (locally, nationally, internationally); the professions: law, medicine, and education, and their effects on society's view of the Deaf; aging and the Deaf. In-depth discussion and contact with professionals in these areas. 4 cr. -

Introduction to the theory and practice of counseling Deaf children, adolescents, and adults. -
WED DE 554: Field Experience: Deaf Studies
Undergraduate Prerequisites: consent of program coordinator. - Students work in an agency providing services to Deaf people for a minimum of one day per week. Supervision maintained in cooperation with the staff of the Deaf Studies Program and agency personnel. Specific placement depends on students' interests in particular setting or area. Explores strategies for educating learners who are DeafDisabled. Students explore the different presentations of these learners and how that variety impacts teachers' preparation and practice. -

Topics include vocabulary development, composition, comprehension, grammar, and understanding the foundations of literacy. We will consider the range of language, developmental, and academic levels that characterize Deaf education classrooms. -
