
Yessica Garcia
Education Advisor, GEAR UP
Yessica Garcia is the Middle School Education Advisor for the GEAR UP program at Boston University Wheelock College of Education & Human Development, serving students at both East Boston High School and Mario Umana Academy. She primarily works with 7th and 8th grade students to promote college and career awareness by helping them develop the skills, access resources, and build the confidence needed to graduate from high school and succeed in postsecondary education. Programming includes workshops, one-on-one and small group advising, field trips, and after-school activities offered in both English and Spanish.
Yessica brings several years of experience in education and mental health to her role. She understands the unique challenges young people face as they navigate major transitions, develop their identities, and manage academic, career, and social pressures. Prior to joining GEAR UP Boston, Yessica worked with GEAR UP Manchester in New Hampshire, served as a mental health therapist in private practice, completed two years of service as an AmeriCorps member with City Year New Hampshire, and later served as an Impact Manager with City Year New Hampshire. City Year is an education-focused nonprofit organization that partners with schools to support student success through academic support, mentorship, attendance initiatives, and social-emotional development.
