Sara Harvel

Dr. Sara Harvel is a lecturer in the Teaching and Learning Department at Boston University’s Wheelock College of Education & Human Development. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in the Secondary Education Program. Her research interests include teacher education, social studies education, human rights education, program evaluation, and professional development for practicing teachers. Dr. Harvel cares deeply about developing classroom communities and curating learning experiences that promote cognitive and social engagement. She is passionate about improving educational access, experiences, and outcomes for all students, particularly multilingual learners and newly arrived immigrant and refugee students.

Before coming to BU Wheelock, Dr. Harvel taught teacher education courses, including elementary social studies methods and practicum and pre-practicum seminars, at the University of Connecticut. She also served as a research assistant for the Human Rights Institute, where she contributed to Human Rights Close to Home, a statewide human rights and civics education initiative for Connecticut based K–12 students and teachers. Dr. Harvel has also served as Director of Social Enterprise for an international NGO in Thailand and as Secondary Social Studies Teacher and Department Head at an international school in China.
