Stephanie Curenton, an associate professor at BU Wheelock, recently joined the board of the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (DEEC), which manages early childhood programs that include daycares, group homes, and foster care and adoption agencies. Along with the 10 other members of the board, Curenton will help set policies and guidelines for early childhood education and care across the state.

“I am so honored to be able to serve my state in this role,” says Curenton. “I am thrilled to be part of the board and be able to represent the children and families from the state, especially those children who are socially marginalized or lack access due to income or geography.”

The director of the Center for the Ecology of Early Childhood Development, Curenton studies the social, cognitive, and language development of low-income and minority children. She previously worked for the federal Office of Child Care, and says that she is “excited to be able to apply the policy thinking and planning skills [she] learned in the federal government to the state context.”
