Three BU Wheelock undergraduates were honored for their scholastic achievements at the BU Wheelock Senior Graduation Celebration. Held virtually, the event honored the academic and co-curricular achievements of graduating students.

Rob Martinelle, BU Wheelock lecturer in curriculum and teaching and social studies education, delivered opening remarks at the celebration. “You are all here because, for you, the uncertainty of the past year was not a roadblock but an opportunity,” he said. “And you’ve kept intact your optimism and imaginations at a time when you had every reason not to.”

BU Wheelock’s Jennifer Bryson, lecturer in elementary education, closed the ceremony with words of advice for the new graduates. “Continue to grow, to challenge yourself, and use your voice to shape a more just world,” she said.

Currier Award Achievement in Science Education: Rose Chen’21

The Currier Award is given to a deserving female student, in her third or fourth academic year, who demonstrates scholastic achievement in the field of Science Education.

As a student at BU Wheelock, Rose Chen majored in science education and minored in chemistry. Following her graduation, she will start teaching with Teach For America. As a first-generation college student, Chen says she is incredibly thankful for the opportunity to learn with such a diverse, motivated, and supportive community. Her experience at BU Wheelock opened her eyes to the power of teaching science for social justice and inspired her passion for education equity.

Dean’s Academic Excellence Award: India Military’21

Given annually to a graduating senior, the Dean’s Academic Excellence Award acknowledges and honors outstanding academic achievement during their attendance at BU Wheelock.

While at BU Wheelock, India Military majored in early childhood education and worked with a multitude of children and families, both in Boston and Los Angeles, where she is originally from. Military says her passion for teaching is firmly rooted in using an anti-bias, culturally sustaining framework to build deep, meaningful relationships with each of her students. She is grateful for the support of her professors, mentors, peers, family, friends, and, of course, the children and families she has had the pleasure of working with.

Peter Foukal Achievement in Math and Science Award and the Student Government Association’s Golden Key Award: Emma Lincoln’21

The Foukal Award recognizes BU Wheelock students who excel in math and science. The Golden Key Award is resented to a graduating senior who has shown exemplary dedication and service to the BU Wheelock Undergraduate SGA

At BU Wheelock, Emma Lincoln majored in math education and minored in special education. She will be returning to Boston University next year to pursue a master’s degree in special education and begin her career as a high school math teacher. Lincoln says she is excited to be a math teacher and is thankful to everyone at BU who has helped her get there.
