6 Tips for Managing MTELs

Information for students seeking educator license in Massachusetts from the Professional Preparation Office

To become a licensed educator (teacher, reading specialist, administrator, counselor) in Massachusetts, in addition to completing your preparation program at BU, you need to pass the Massachusetts Tests for Educator License (MTEL).

To help you be successful on the MTEL, please keep in mind the following tips:

  • Make sure you know which MTEL exams you need to take. All teaching licenses require a passing score on the Communications & Literacy MTEL. You will also need to take subject-tests specific to the content area of the license you’re pursuing. Use this tool from the Department of Education to find out which MTELs you need to take.
  • Gather test information for each MTEL you need to take – dates, sites, format, etc.
  • Be wise about timing. Make sure you are not registering for multiple tests on the same day. Check in with your faculty about which of your courses contain test prep material. Finally, allow yourself time to retake the test if needed. Score reports take approximately 4-6 weeks to be sent out.
  • BU Wheelock offers free MTEL prep sessions to students. For a schedule of MTEL prep sessions offered available to you, visit the Professional Preparation Office.
  • Use the official MTEL website for study material and Practice Tests.
