Incoming email messages contain information about the routing of the message between its sender and you. By default, most email clients don’t automatically display all of this information for you – you will see just the basic header information, such as From, Subject, Date, and To, and the rest of the header is hidden. However, sometimes you will need to display full headers in order to send them in to the IT Help Center for support.
Follow these steps to display full headers in a variety of e-mail clients
In order to get full headers, double-click on the message so it opens in a new window. Then go to File and click on Properties (on the Info tab). You will then see the Internet headers at the bottom of the window. If you need to e-mail the full headers to the Help Center, you can select, copy, and paste the header text.
Outlook Web Access (Exchange 2010)
Double-click to open the message you want headers for in its own window. Then, hover over the button bar at the top until you see the button called Message Details. Click on it and you will then see Internet headers in the resulting window. If you need to e-mail the full headers to the Help Center, you can select, copy, and paste the header text.
OS X Mail
Go to the View menu and select Message and then Long Headers or even better, if the option is available, choose Raw Source. To copy this information into a new message, you may then choose Edit:Copy, open a new message, and choose Edit:Paste.
Outlook 2011 for Mac
Right-click on the message in the item list and select View Source. If you need to e-mail the full headers to the Help Center, you can select, copy, and paste the message text.
Entourage for Mac
Double-click the message to open it in a new window, and choose View-Internet Headers.
Select the message you want headers for and choose View-Headers-All. If you are working on a support issue with the IT Help Center, you can simply forward the message now and all of the headers will be available to them. To hide full headers, choose View-Headers-Normal.
BU Google Mail and personal Gmail
- Double click the message to open it
- Click on the “three dots” button in the upper right corner of the message
- From the resulting pull-down menu, select Show Original. This action will open a separate window containing the raw message source, which includes your full headers.
- Copy the resulting message source and paste it into a new e-mail message, which you can then use to send in to the IT Help Center.
Open the mail message, then scroll down to the bottom of the message, and click on Full Headers, which is right justified along the line that has “Previous,” “Next,” etc. The message will not forward with full headers, but you can copy and paste the displayed headers into a new mail message, which you can then send in to the IT Help Center.
Right-click on the message and choose Options. You will see the Internet headers at the bottom of the window. If necessary, you can select, copy, and paste the header text to get it into a format that you can send.
Double-click the message to open it in a new window, and full headers will display.
When viewing a message, press the H key. This turns on display of full headers for all messages. When you want to turn the full header display off, press the H key again.
