Live Transcription
Can I transcribe meetings in Teams?
Yes, Teams includes live transcription for all event types.
Do I need a special license to transcribe my meetings?
No, live transcription is available for all Teams license holders.
How do I start a live transcription?
Live transcription begins as soon as you start recording a meeting. Transcription can also be enabled without starting a recording.
How do I stop a live transcription?
Transcriptions can be stopped at any time by clicking on “More Actions …” and then clicking the stop transcription under Record and Transcribe.
Who can start and stop live transcription in a meeting?
Organizers, co-organizers and presenters can start and stop transcriptions.
Attendees from outside of the BU domain cannot control transcription. They can, however, view the transcript.
Anonymous meeting members cannot view or control transcripts.
Can I change the transcript language?
Yes, you can change the language at any time before or during a meeting. Note that if the language is changed, any attendees who join the meeting after the change will ONLY see the new, translated language.
Live Captions
Are there in-meeting live caption features?
Yes, Microsoft Teams can generate live captions for Microsoft Teams meetings or connect with CART providers for professional captions.
Do I need a special license to turn on live captions?
No, all Teams license holders can enable live captions in meetings.
Are translated live captions available?
Yes, but only for Teams Premium or Copilot license holders.
If the meeting organizer has a Teams Premium or Copilot license, then any attendee can enable translated captions. Even if the meeting organizer does not carry one of those licenses, attendees with Teams Premium or Copilot licenses can still enable translated captions for themselves.

Meeting Notes and Summaries
I currently use Zoom to create AI-generated meeting summaries or minutes. Can I do this in Teams?
Yes, with a Teams Premium license, Teams can create an Intelligent Recap, which can produce summaries, action items, or recordings with chapters. More information about Teams Premium can be found below.

What AI features are available in Teams
The base Teams license contains only a few AI features. For more advanced AI features like note taking, tasks or Facilitator, you will need to purchase an additional license (see below).
What is Facilitator?
Teams Facilitator is a Copilot feature that acts as an AI-powered team member. Facilitator brings Copilot features available to an individual to the entire meeting.
If Facilitator is part of your meeting, it will:
- Track the discussion in real-time
- Read the meeting agenda and keep you on track
- Set a visual timer
- Suggest notes and log action items
- Create structured follow-up tasks in Planner
- Respond to attendee prompts
Who is eligible to receive advanced licenses?
Any staff or faculty member at BU may request a Teams Premium or Copilot license.
Students who require additional meeting features may be assigned a Teams Premium license for a set duration if deemed necessary.
Students are ineligible to purchase Teams Premium or Copilot licenses.
What is the cost for one of these licenses?
Teams Premium licenses cost $23/year and can be requested here.
Copilot licenses cost ~$209/year and can be requested by emailing the IT Help Center.
